Local Spotlight: Avery Research Center presents ISMs

CDS is proud of our colleauges who donate their time and talent in the community. Bridget Stahl, CDS Campaign Associate, is no exception.

Bridget came to CDS through her work with RosaLuz, a children’s charity she established to work with underprivileged and at risk youth both locally right here in Charleston, SC where she calls home and in third world countries that lack the resources to help their young vulnerable population. Another group Bridget is involved with, Charleston Black Theatre will be guest performers at this week’s opening reception at the Avery Research Institute’s Gallery presentation of ISMs.

Charleston’s Post & Courier ran a summary regarding the Gallery opening this weekend. The exhibit will feature local artists addressing sexism, classism, ageism, consumerism, ghettoism, parochialism, racism, anti-intellectualism, anti-semitism and other prejudices that create societal discord.

We salute the work of Bridget in the community to help fight for social justice and equity. The full press release for the Gallery Opening:

ISMS The Exhibition

The artists of *BAMN’N present  “ISMS” a visual arts exhibition at the Avery Research Center,125 Bull Street, Charleston, SC, It will be on view from February 12 to May 30, 2015. The opening reception is Thursday, February 26, from 6-8 pm (free to the public).

Theme

Nine Lowcountry and two New York City artists have created provocative visual essays on the oppressive and alienating forces that negative “isms” wreak on society. These “isms” often have a debilitating impact on people and neither time nor location tends to buffer their insidious destruction. Some of these “isms” are: Sexism, Classism, Ageism, Consumerism, Ghettoism, Parochialism, Racism, Anti-Intellectualism, Anti-Semitism, Separatism, etcetera. Many of us bear the metaphysical scars of our personal confrontations with these isms. While the mental and emotional scarring can be much more perversely concrete.

As artists, we have the tools, passion and spirit to visually convey our insights, perspectives on these ills and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, by creating powerful, inspiring works of art. Works that have universal appeal while balancing the message with aesthetic values.

In the face of local, national and global current events, we artists cannot bow down to fear, ignorance, hate, greed and envy- the backbone of negative isms. We stand with all who believe in Freedom, Justice, Equality and Human/Civil Rights for all. We celebrate our humanity and profess that all lives matter.
